Exterior Description And Setting

A 3 bay wide, 2½ storey detached house with single storey back return. The front elevation to Fairhill Street has a central flat roof projecting porch with entrance door in flanking wall with fanlight, with double hung sliding sash 2 pane window on front wall. On each side of porch a single double hung sliding sash 2 pane window. At 1st floor 3 similar windows centred over elements below. There is an odd double cornice to the porch, presumably forming a low parapet. ½ round gutter fixed to fascia board with slight overhang, roof asbestos slates, 3 redbrick chimneystacks, plain ridge tiles and a single Velux type rooflight near ridge. Gables are windowless except for small vertical window under bargeboard lighting attic and another providing daylight to the kitchen. To the rear similar windows as front but centre windows are at landing level with one at the attic landing and of less height. The lean-to back return occupies one bay, has modern windows and rear door. Walls roughcast rendered, painted white. To the N side of the house is a 2 storey outhouse with gabled hoist at eaves level and walls and roof finished as house. At rear of garden near the Tow viaduct is a large shed with curved Belfast roof trusses. The house is set back a short distance from the footwalk in Fairhill Street with roughcast finished boundary wall and field gate. To the S side is the River Tow and the site of a former saw mill.

A well preserved and renovated 19th century house with Georgian proportions but diluted with use of asbestos slates and loss of small Georgian panes.
