Exterior Description And Setting

A 1½ storey 3 bay former gate lodge with single storey back return. The elevation to Quay Road setback a little from the footwalk is a happy assymetrical composition with off-centre sheeted doorway having an emphasised lintol with a double hung sliding sash. There is a 4 pane window to the right and another to the left but a little further from the door. Above the last but a little off-line is a gabled dormer with double hung sliding sash 4 pane window. Decorative bargeboards to dormer, and eaves overhang. Ground floor cills have deterrent grills, neatly done. Walls roughcast, painted white. Natural slated roof, single chimney stack on ridge. 1 metal downpipe and gutter. The SW gable single double hung sliding sash 4 pane window in centre with another directly above. Steep pitched roofline with decorative barges and overhang. Other gable similarly treated. The back return has unequal roof lengths and neatly fenestrated with double hung sliding sash 4 pane windows as is the rear of main house. The gable window is double light and that on the SW wall a little larger than the others. The house has screen walls to back of footwalk with that on the SW side curving as if into a gateway, but this was not so as gateway to grounds of Silverstream house was several metres SW.

Historical Information

The former lodge was built sometime before 1929. It does not exist on the 1904 O.S. Map and was occupied by Major and Mrs King while they supervised the building of Silverstream house (see HB05/14/030A). The lodge was substantilally renovated and largely rebuilt during the development around the Silverstream house grounds and the present owners have occupied since. References Primary Sources 1. O.S. Evaluation

A pleasing 1920s former gate lodge elegantly renovated and restored with minor modifications. While it breaks the general building line of Quay Road it adds to the charm of its setting and the approach to Silverstream house.
