Exterior Description And Setting

A 4 bay wide 3 storey building with basement and gateway. On ground floor from left, a panelled door leading to upper floor, then a wide aluminium framed shopfront with central double doors and large single pane glass shop window on each side. Low cill with panel under, pilaster at each end. Over, a long name fascia in glass or vitrolite. To right of shopfront a segmental arched gateway. At 1st floor 4 no. D/H S/S 2 pane windows with exposed sash boxes. A plain shallow lugged architrave to each window. At 2nd floor similar windows of slightly less height and thinner architraves. Above ½ metal gutter over corbel course, single downpipe. Asbestos slates on roof, large chimney stacks on each gable and an additional chimney lining with gateway. Wall smooth rendered and painted. Architraves not picked out. Rear elevation: roof of main street front block appears to be of artificial slates; pvc gutter; wall is rendered with dry dash; windows to top floor are rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents. Projecting from rear wall of main block is a long rear return in three stages: three-storey flat-roofed where adjoining main block; two-storey flat-roofed link; three-storey segmental arched roofed at the rear. Windows in rear return are of modern glazing arrangement, mainly casement and fixed light; walls rendered, with dry dash. Rear boundary of plot is formed by a rendered wall containing a pair of corrugated iron gates. SETTING: The building stands in the main street of the town directly overlooking the pavement, and built within a terrace of houses and shops.

Historical Information

Precise date of building not known: buildings are shown in the area of this and neighbouring properties on the OS map of 1832, probably dating from the mid-1700s when the town was developed. An approximately similar block is shown on the OS map of 1857, but by 1904 the individual buildings in the block are distinguishable. This one is shown in 1904 as having a rear return at No. 19. There appear to be no surviving features from the mid-18th century; any surviving features such as fenestration pattern and size date probably from the mid-to late 19th century, while recent alterations have now determined much of the overall character of the building.
