Exterior Description And Setting

A narrow front 1 bay wide 3 storey terrace building with basement. On ground floor, shop door to right is modern timber glazed and panelled with shop window having 2 upper small panes. Pilaster on both sides and name fascia over with timber cornice. At 1st floor a single large vertical window (Double Hung Sliding Sash) with 8 panes. Cill on top of name fascia. At 2nd floor a 3 light casement window with head under gutter. Wall in smooth rendering, lined and blocked. Roof natural slates. Half-round gutter with cast iron downpipe shared with Nos. 11 and 13. Rear elevation: gabled two-storey rear return: smooth rendered walls; pvc downpipes; glazed and panelled door, approached by 6 concrete steps. Two windows, one in each floor, modern rectangular pvc fixed light with top-hung vent. Beyond a small rear yard is a long outbuilding with low monopitch roof of corrugated iron; pvc rainwater goods; smooth cement rendered rear wall. Rear boundary of site is formed by a pair of corrugated iron gates set between rendered piers. A narrow fronted terrace building maintaining building line.

Historical Information

Precise date of building not known: buildings are shown in the area of this and neighbouring houses on the OS map of 1832, probably dating from the mid-1700s when the town was developed. An approximately similar block is shown on the OS map of 1857, but by 1904 the individual buildings in the block are distinguishable: this one is shown in 1904 as having no return. While the original street front block and ridge height may thus date from the mid-18th century there appear to be no surviving features from that period; any surviving features such as fenestration pattern and size date probably from the mid-to late 19th century, while recent alterations have now determined much of the overall character of the building.
