Exterior Description And Setting

3 storey 2 bay wide with basement and shopfront. At ground floor a timber framed shop window and door with rendered finish wall under cill and a plain pilaster on each side. The name fascia extends width of façade. First floor windows are new rectangular timber sliding sash, 2 over 2, with horns, set in plain reveals, with projecting concrete cills. Wall smooth rendered, lined and blocked with projecting eaves course and timber eaves board; ½ round gutter, shared cast iron downpipes with No. 11. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses, common with No. 15. Rear elevation: roof of main street front block is of artificial slates, common with No. 15, with one modern rooflight; no chimney. Walling is smooth rendered, with timber eaves board; looks like pvc gutter; one small rectangular window, looks like pvc. Projecting from rear wall of main block is a very long two-storey rear return: walls rendered, wet dash; pitched roofs of concrete tiles. Rectangular pvc windows in side walls and gable; pvc rainwater goods. Gable of rear return has a steel fire escape. Rear boundary comprises a steel sheeted doorscreen set between rendered piers.

Historical Information

Precise date of building not known: buildings are shown in the area of this and neighbouring houses on the OS map of 1832, probably dating from the mid-1700s when the town was developed. An approximately similar block is shown on the OS map of 1857, but by 1904 the individual buildings in the block are distinguishable: this one is shown in 1904 as having no return. While the original street front block and ridge height may thus date from the mid-18th century there appear to be no surviving features from that period; any surviving features such as fenestration pattern and size date probably from the mid-to late 19th century, while recent alterations have now determined much of the overall character of the building.
