Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey shop and house on the corner of New Street and The Parade, probably originally dating from the early 1800s. No.18 The Parade is a shop which faces N. To the ground floor centre left is a large modern shop front consisting of a glazed door flanked by two large-ish fixed light windows. To the left of this is a modern multi paned window. Directly above these windows is a long laminated signboard. To the first floor are three modern six pane windows (actually belonging to No.24 New Street). No.24 New Street faces E. To the slightly left of centre on the ground floor is the house entrance, consisting of a panelled door with semicircular ‘radial’ fanlight, all encased with blocked an fluted pilasters and architrave with keystone. To the left of this is a small window with modern frame and to the right of the doorway is a large-ish modern shop window. To the first floor are three windows as first floor previous facade. The entire N and E facades are covered in rough cast with chamfered quoins and base. There appeared to be no space to the rear because of the proximity of other buildings, and it was not possible to see the rear facade clearly even from a distance away. The roof is hipped and covered in concrete tiles, with two large flat roofed dormers with timber sides and modern windows. Render chimney stack to W. cast iron rw goods.

Historical Information

Though a building is indicated on The Parade section of this site in Daniel De la Cherois’s Donaghadee map of c.1780, New Street did not begin to be laid out until the 1810s. Thus this building probably dates from c.1810-20. In the valuation records of c.1836 the block (then referred to simply as a ‘house’) was in possession of a William Waugh and had a rateable value of £10-0-0. According to the present owner, the present shop was once two separate establishments, a suggestion which does not appear to be confirmed by photographs of The Parade dating from the early 1900s. The physical evidence within the shop itself attests to the former presence of two separate rooms, but these may date from when the building was purely a dwelling house. As Daniel died in 1790, the map can thus be dated to some time between 1771-90. At some point someone has written on the map ‘about 1780’, a date which may be accurate.] 2.
