Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey/ three bay vernacular house aligned W-E on the E side of Foughilletra Rd with associated outbuildings. The left bay is single-storey. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled verges and a cement rendered chimney to each gable. An advanced eaves course supports half-round metal rainwater goods, with downpipe to right of centre. Walls are whitewashed random rubble stone to façade; all other elevations are cement rendered. All windows are top-hung metal-framed casements with no cills. Those to ground floor have modern steel grilles over. Principal elevation faces N. Left of centre is a projecting porch with pitched natural slate roof and timber-sheeted front door; right and left cheeks are blank. To either side of porch is a window, that to right has been enlarged within its original opening. First floor has two windows, diminished in height; that to left is slightly smaller than other first floor window and not aligned with that below. The single bay has a window to centre. The left gable is abutted to front by a single-storey outbuilding set perpendicular to house; the exposed section of left gable and central bay are blank. The outbuilding has a pitched natural slate roof with whitewashed facade and two t+g sheeted doors to centre - all other elevations are cement rendered and blank. Rear elevation of main block has a window to each floor of each bay. Right gable is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding - the exposed section is blank. The outbuilding is detailed as before with pitched corrugated metal roof. Its N face has two t+g sheeted doors; one to extreme left end and one to right of centre. Rear elevation is blank. Its right gable is abutted by a lower and narrower shed with lean-to corrugated metal roof and cement rendered walls. It has a t+g sheeted door to N face; all other elevations are blank. Barn Opposite house is a two-storey outbuilding with pitched natural slate roof. All openings are t+g sheeted unless otherwise stated. S elevation has two central doors, under a common timber lintel. At first floor, set to right of centre, is an infilled window opening (with metal sheeting). Left gable is abutted by a small cement-rendered lean-to shed with monopitched natural slate roof and with a large opening to S (all other elevations are blank). The exposed gable of main block has an infilled window opening to centre. Rear elevation has a loading door accessed by three external granite steps. The right gable is blank. Setting: The house occupies an elevated site and is accessed by a lane with rubble stone boundary walls to either side. Square-in-section whitewashed rubble stone gate piers (without copings) support a pair of ram’s-head wrought-iron gates.

Historical Information

A building is shown hereabouts on the 1835 OS map, but its plan does not accord with the present one, which is shown on the 1861 edition onward. There are no changes in the Valuation books’ rateable values thereafter. The present building evidently dates from the mid 1800s. Primary sources: 1. Evaluation

A pleasantly sited and well-maintained vernacular dwelling, retaining most of its original character. Along with its outbuildings, it forms an attractive hillside group.
