Exterior Description And Setting

Two-storey/ three-bay rendered house on east side of Windsor Hill. Double hipped natural slate roof with central valley and boxed overhanging eaves. Two rendered and coped chimneys rise parallel to facade from behind ridge of front roof. Front, left and right elevations are rendered over raised chamfered base course. Band rusticated to ground floor and lined with stepped render quoins to first floor. A raised render platband runs between ground and first floors. Three moulded granite steps rise to main entrance on central bay of façade. Door is four panelled timber (top two larger) with beaded muntin, raised and fielded bolection-moulded panels and original brass furniture. It has a quarter chamfered timber frame with three transoms and side light with panelled apron. All are set within a segmental headed opening with roll moulded chamfered head. This opening is flanked by panelled render pilasters, with moulded heads which continue into reveal of opening. At top, panelled render corbels support a moulded cornice. Over cornice is a balconette, comprising a Gothic revival cast-iron railing over plinth and terminated by panelled piers. To left and right bays at ground floor are single storey canted bays. Each has a raised base course (as main elevation), and moulded cornice with raised fretted parapet. There is a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns to each cheek, all sharing a common granite cill. To first floor, centred over door, is a pair of 1/1 semicircular headed sliding sashes with horns. Over each bay window is a 1/1 sliding sash with horns. Right elevation is two bays wide; that to right is carried forward. Walls are detailed as facade with stepped quoins to each corner. There is a single 1/1sliding sash window with horns and granite cill to each bay on each floor. Those to ground floor have voussoirs delineated in the render channels. Those to first floor have no voussoirs and that to right has horizontal bars to bottom sash. Wall continues to right as left cheek of rear left return. Left elevation is mirror image of right elevation. Wall continues at ground floor left as right cheek of rear right return. Rear elevation is abutted to left and right by lower two storey returns. Both have pitched natural slate roofs which abut rear wall of main block. Remainder of rear wall is painted lined render; a central panel of wall is raised forward, the main roof cat-sliding over. Ground floor was not inspected. To central panel between ground and first floors is a semicircular headed stained, leaded glass half landing window. To left and right, filling wall between raised panel and rear returns are single modern 1/1 top-hung timber windows in older openings. The rear returns have pitched natural slate roofs and painted rendered walls. Both have modern top-hung timber windows fronting onto rear yard. Setting Setting comprises lawned gardens, with orchard to rear right and a broad driveway with modern garage to front right. Originally garden was much larger, but land to left now has a more recent house. House is raised well above level of Windsor Hill and approached by a double flight of steps from car parking area.

Two-storey/ three-bay rendered house. Good example of a substantial late Victorian suburban residence, but not sufficiently special to merit listing.
