Exterior Description And Setting

A one-and-a-half storey / three bay vernacular house aligned W-E on a lane to the W of Crocknaboghill Townland. Pitched corrugated metal roof (roof has been raised in two courses of concrete blocks) with three lime-rendered chimneys; one to each gable and one to party wall between left and central bay. A timber eaves board supports half-round metal rainwater goods. Plain timber bargeboards to each gable. Walls are lime-rendered coursed rubble stone. Windows are 1/2 timber top-hung casements covered with protective perspex. Cills are stone. Principal elevation faces S. Central bay has a timber sheeted door accessed by two stone steps and set just to left of centre. To its right is a window. Left and right bays each have a window to centre. Left gable has a small window opening to upper level, set to right of centre. Rear elevation has a central window (detailed as before but smaller) to left and right bay. Central bay has a large 3/3 sliding sash (outside panes are narrower) with timber lintel to left of centre. Right gable has a window opening to upper floor set to left of centre. It has the ghost marks of a lower outbuilding formerly with pitched roof. All walls are gone with the exception of that to S, which contains a door opening to extreme left. Outbuildings: There is a turf house to SW and a single storey outbuilding to rear. Both have pitched corrugated metal roofs (that to turf house is raised and rests on two courses of concrete blocks) and lime-rendered rubble stone walls. The N gable of the turf house has been sheeted with corrugated metal and contains a large opening. There are five tall narrow ventilation openings; three to E elevation and two to W. The S gable is blank. The outbuilding has a door to either end of yard-facing elevation (that to left has a t+g-sheeted door). To left of centre is a small square fixed pane window set below eaves level. To right of centre is a tall ventilation slit. Left gable is abutted by a lower lean-to shed (see later). Rear elevation is cement-rendered and blank. Right gable is blank. The shed is detailed as outbuilding with a monopitched corrugated metal roof. It has a large opening to yard-facing elevation and a small square opening to rear. Setting: The house occupies a picturesque elevated site and is well sheltered by a number of mature trees. It is accessed from the road by a long winding lane.

Evaluation

A secluded hearth-lobby entry vernacular house which retains much of its original character. It occupies a pleasant wooded site and along with its outbuilding and turf house forms a vernacular group of some interest.
