Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey stable and byre, with hayloft over, aligned SW-NE to the E side of Corraghy Townland. Pitched natural slate roof with half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are random sandstone rubble (recently re-pointed with cement) with large dressed sandstone quoins. Openings have sandstone lintels and flush stone cills. Principal elevation faces SE. A third line of stepped quoins to left of centre shows the building to have been extended to left. There is a modern t+g sheeted-door (not quite full-height) to extended left side. To centre of original elevation is a pair of t+g sheeted doors, sharing dressed and tooled stepped reveals. To either side of these doors is a timber single-pane top-hung casement window. First floor has two window openings; one aligned to right of extreme left-hand door, and one set slightly to left of centre above the paired doors. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation is built into a bank and is single storey. There is a modern t+g sheeted door to either end, giving into hayloft at first floor. The raised bank is accessed by nine external steps rising from a yard at right. Right gable has a single top-hung casement window to first floor. Setting: The stable forms part of a coherent group comprising a turf house (HB12/01/047) directly opposite and a sweat-house (HB12/01/046) close-by. The present complex includes a modern farm and two modern dwellings, all occupying an isolated site at the end of a long lane.

Evaluation

An incorporated stable and byre building built into a bank which, although much altered, retains some original form and stonework. The building occupies an elevated site and forms part of an interesting and coherent group with a turf house (HB12/01/047) opposite and a sweat house (HB12/01/046) nearby.
