Exterior Description And Setting

A single-storey three bay vernacular house with outbuildings to rear (see HB12/01/074A), aligned W-E on a long lane to the SW of Carrowmaculla Townland. Pitched corrugated metal roof with two concrete block chimneys with chamfered stone copings set at party wall between each bay. A timber eaves board supports the vestiges of half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are whitewashed and lime-rendered rubble stone. Principal elevation faces S. Central bay has a 1/1 metal framed top-hung casement window with stone cill to left (all windows are as this unless otherwise stated) and a windbreak porch to right. The porch has a flat cement coped roof with timber sheeted door to front face. Right and left cheeks are blank. Left and right bays each have a central window. Left and right gables each have a window to the gable apex; that to left is a 1x2 metal framed casement, that to right is a single fixed pane. Rear elevation has a pair of 2x2 fixed pane windows with a central timber mullion and splayed cill set to left hand-side of central bay. Outbuildings: There are two outbuildings to rear; that directly to N is two storey and constructed in sandstone, and is recorded separately under HB12/01/074A. That to W is single storey and is detailed as house with a pitched natural slate roof. The E elevation has four openings (from left): 1) an infilled doorway, 2) a window at eaves level infilled with corrugated metal, 3) a t+g sheeted door with (4) a window opening inset slightly to immediate right and sharing its jamb. Each gable has a 1/1 timber casement at apex (N gable is built into a bank). W elevation has three openings (from right): 1) a door opening, 2) a window opening with head at eaves level, 3) a t+g sheeted door. Setting: The group occupies an extremely isolated and exposed site in open farmland and is reached by a long concrete path laid through marshland and accessed from a series of lanes off Ballagh Road.

A direct-entry dwelling with outbuildings occupying a remote and exposed site. Along with its sandstone outbuilding (HB12/01/074A) the cottage forms part of a coherent vernacular group.
