Exterior Description And Setting

A one-storey/ single-bay former schoolhouse aligned north-south on the south side of a minor road just east of bridge HB12/01/073. Pitched natural slate roof with sandstone chimneys to both gables; that to north end is decorative, not functional. Smooth lined cement-rendered walls. The north gable has a lower porch, detailed at the main block. It has a beaded t+g entrance door to its left cheek, window to its end gable (sheeted over), and is blank to its right cheek. The exposed section of the main block is blank. The east elevation has two windows, now infilled with concrete blocks. These and all other windows have dressed sandstone cills. The south gable is blank. The west elevation also had two 2/2 sliding sash windows (with horns), both sheeted over. No entrance gate pillars survive.

Historical Information

No building is shown on the 1859 OS 6” map. A house valued at 15s.0d. is cited in the 1862 valuation, but it is probably not the present building. ‘Doon School’ is shown on the 1906-07 OS map.
