Exterior Description And Setting

A granite milepost, embedded in a granite rubble stone wall immediately E of HB16/15/025 on N side of road. Moved from its original location on the main Newry-Dundalk road about 1995. The milepost is finely dressed to front face and roughly cut to rear with a pointed head. It stands 145cm high and is 50cm wide by 35cm deep. However the lower section is much more coarsely detailed than the upper section and it probably originally stood only 85cm above the ground. Affixed to front face is a cast-iron plaque (35cm high and 33cm wide) with black raised letters reading ‘Dundalk / 8 / Newry / 5’.
