Exterior Description And Setting

A single storey/ two storey vernacular house aligned W-E with W gable to Foughilletra Road. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled skews. There is a cement rendered brick chimney to each gable and a brick chimney between central and right bays. An advanced eaves course supports the remains of half-round metal rainwater goods. Walls are lime-rendered rubble stone. All windows are 1/1 sliding sashes with horns and concrete cills unless otherwise stated. Principal elevation faces S. Left bay is single storey and has a large 2/2 sliding sash window (with horns) to front face. Central bay has a windbreak porch with monopitched natural slate roof at extreme left end and a window to its right. Front face of porch has a t+g sheeted door; right and left cheeks are blank. Right bay has a single window. Aligned above to first floor are three windows, all diminished in height (that to right has a brick cill). Left gable is blank. Rear elevation of left and right bays is blank. Central bay is abutted to ground floor by a lean-to annex. First floor has a window set to left of centre. Annex has a monopitched natural slate roof. Walls are cement rendered with unrendered rubble stone left cheek. All elevations are blank with the exception of right cheek, which has a centrally placed window detailed as before. Right gable of main block is abutted by a single-storey outbuilding. The exposed section is blank. Outbuilding has a pitched artificial slate roof with concrete block chimney to right gable. Walls are as house. Front (S) elevation has a timber-sheeted door at left and a metal-framed lattice window at right (no cill). Left gable abuts house. Rear elevation has a shuttered window at right. Right gable is blank. Setting: House is set within a domestic yard enclosed to road by a pebble-dashed boundary wall with square-in-section gate piers supporting a pair of modern metal gates. The yard contains a number of outbuildings. All have rubble stone walls and pitched natural slate roofs unless otherwise stated. That to SE corner is two storey (rear is single storey due to slope of yard) and is abutted to extreme right end by a lower shed which projects to W. Openings are t+g sheeted. That to NE corner is single storey L-plan, and consists of a utility block with t+g openings to E and an byre with three door openings to N. The byre has a monopitched corrugated metal roof.

Historical Information

Although a building is shown at this spot on both the 1835 OS maps, it is not cited in the First Valuation book of 1836 – this indicates a small one-storey vernacular structure. A building with the ground plan of the present one is depicted on the 1861 OS map. The Valuation Revision book entry of 1870 notes “addition to house – new offices”, and an increase in rateable value from £2 to £3.5.0. There is a further increase to £4.5.0 in 1873.
