Exterior Description And Setting

A single-storey, two-bay vernacular house with outbuildings to right gable, aligned N-S on the W side of Dernaroy Road. Pitched natural slate roof with concrete skews and brick chimney to each gable. Slightly advanced eaves course. No rainwater goods. Walls are whitewashed lime-rendered rubble stone. Principal elevation faces E. Left bay has a central exposed box 2/2 sliding sash (with horns) and whitewashed granite cill. Right bay has a windbreak porch to left and a window, detailed as before, to right (although cill is set below window level). Porch has a natural slate lean-to roof and metal gutter. Front face has a 1950s glazed timber door. Right and left cheeks are blank. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation has an infilled window opening set to left. Right gable is completely abutted by an outbuilding with pitched corrugated metal roof. E elevation has a large pair of t+g sheeted doors. Its right gable is abutted by a lower and narrower outbuilding (see later); the exposed section is blank. Rear elevation has a metal-framed top-hung casement window with obscured glass to extreme right-end. Outbuilding has a pitched natural slate roof with a corrugated metal door to extreme left end of E face. Right gable has a small top-hung 2x1 timber window to apex. Rear elevation is blank. To front are two small outbuildings. Setting: Dwelling is enclosed from the road by a rubble stone wall with squared granite gate piers (with pyramidal copings) supporting a cast-iron gate.

Historical Information

Although a building is shown at this spot on both the 1835 and 1861 OS maps, it does not share the ground plan of the present one.
