Exterior Description And Setting

A single-storey/ three-bay gate lodge aligned SW-NE on the E side of Captains Road. Pitched natural slate roof with decorative bargeboards with perforated cross detail. Exposed rafter tails. Two cement rendered chimneys - one to left gable and the other on party wall between the bays. Walls are lined cement rendered (unless otherwise stated). Windows are top-hung timber casements with granite cills. Principal elevation faces SE. The left bay has a similarly detailed projecting porch to right and a window to left. Porch has a 2x4 panelled timber door to front face; right and left cheeks each have a narrow cast-iron Gothic lattice window. Middle and right bays each have a window to centre. Right and left gables are blank. Rear elevation is wet-dashed and has a 2/2 sliding sash to left bay with machined brick jambs and head. Middle bay and left half of right bay are abutted by a lean-to return with monopitched natural slate roof and timber door to front face. Right and left cheeks are blank. The remainder of right bay is blank.

Historical Information

A building, probably a gate lodge to Forkhill House (HB16/15/031A), is shown here on the 1835 OS map. Around 1840 the estate was sold to Henry Alexander, and the lodge was extended by a bay to its present form; he also added the ornate cast-iron lattice windows. Alexander’s son Captain Granville Henry Jackson Alexander added the decorative bargeboards in 1880. Primary sources: 1. OS 6” map, 1st edition 1835, Co Armagh sheet 31 (PRONI OS 6/2/31/1). Evaluation

A single-storey/ three-bay gate lodge of rectangular plan form at the entrance to Forkhill House. Its internal features are gone and, although it forms a coherent group with the gate screen (HB16/15/031C) and house (HB16/15/031A), it is not of special architectural or historic interest.
