Exterior Description And Setting

A much altered prominently sited two-storey public house with modern single-storey extension to left gable. It is aligned N-S along the W side of Main Street, immediately ahead of the Forkhill Bridge. Roof is pitched artificial slate with a modern brick chimney to each gable and to right of centre. Overhanging eaves with modern carved timber bargeboards supporting ogee aluminium rainwater goods. Walls are smooth rendered and painted with contrasting base course and stepped stucco quoins. All windows are modern top-hung timber casements with concrete cills and painted reveals (unless otherwise stated). Principal elevation faces E. To left of centre is a projecting entrance porch with pitched artificial slate roof and bargeboards; its front face contains a modern panelled mahogany door with narrow transom over. Left and right cheek each contain a slender fixed-pane timber window. To left of porch are two large 2x2 casements (bottom panes have obscured glass). To right of porch are three equally spaced 1/1 windows. Aligned above to first floor are similar windows, diminished in height. Between ground and first floor windows are two timber fascia boards with painted lettering. Above porch is a circular plastic advertising sign. Left gable is abutted by lower extension HB16/15/008 but now of no interest. The exposed section is lined and rendered and is blank. Rear elevation is almost completely abutted by a modern two-storey return with flat roof (of no interest). The exposed upper left section is pebble-dashed with smooth rendered quoins with no openings. Right gable is abutted by the single-storey addition (of no interest). The exposed section has a window to first floor left.

A building is shown at this location on the 1835 OS map and subsequent editions. However, its evolutionary development could not be ascertained from the Valuation books as its plot number on the Valuation map could not be determined. Primary sources: 1.
