Exterior Description And Setting

Site, on a sight rise to the E of the Belfast Road, c.2.5 miles NW of Downpatrick, of a two storey farmhouse of probable pre 1834 construction, demolished in 1990 with new dwelling house now on site. The original building was described in the first survey of August 1978 as ‘Traditional farm dwelling. Slated gabled roof, raised verges, yellow brick chimneys. Smooth rendered lined, stepped quoins, plinth. Drop hung sashes [on] first floor and ground floor. Door, ground floor, panelled with plain fanlight. Label mouldings over all openings’.

Historical Information

The house formerly on this site was probably that shown on the OS map of 1834. The contemporary (c.1835) valuation records tell us that the property was newly built at that stage (the valuers graded it ‘A’) and belonged to a Mr Thomas Richey. It appears to have remained in the Richey family until the early 20th century. The house was demolished in 1990 and a new large dwelling built in its place.
