Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey, two bay vernacular house, aligned N-S on a lane S of Carn Road. Pitched natural slate roof with a central brick chimney and tiled verges. Half round metal rainwater goods with downpipe to middle of left bay. All walls are lime-rendered random rubble, with tarred base course. Principal elevation faces E. To extreme right end of right bay is a slightly advanced windbreak porch with monopitched natural slate roof, t+g sheeted door with glazed panel and a single granite step. Right and left cheeks are blank. To its left is a 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window with horns and granite cill. All windows are similarly detailed. Set to first floor centre (between ground floor window and porch) is a 2/2 vertically divided sash, slightly diminished in height. Left bay has two windows to ground floor, that to right is a 1/2 sash (probably originally 2/2) and that to left was similar but now partially boarded up. To first floor centre (between two ground floor windows) is a 2/2 sash diminished in height. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation has a 1/1 sash window to each floor. That to ground floor is to right end of left bay; that to first floor is to centre of right bay. Right gable is blank and is abutted by the remains of a ruinous single storey rubble stone outbuilding with door opening to centre of E elevation (ghost marks of pitched roof are visible). Front (E) yard has two rubble stone outbuildings set to either side. That to right (N) has a pitched natural slate roof and tarred base course. Main S elevation has a t+g sheeted door to left and a corrugated metal door to right. Left gable and rear elevation are blank. Its right gable is abutted by a lower, shallower and ruinous outbuilding. Its rear elevation is abutted by a smaller similarly detailed outbuilding, Its main (W) gable has a large pair of corrugated metal doors. All other faces are blank. Outbuilding to left is ruinous - only the left gable and rear wall remain. It formerly had a monopitched natural slate roof with a small brick chimney to rear left corner. It has a fire opening with cast iron grate to left gable wall. Setting: This group of vernacular buildings is set well back from the Carn Road and accessed by a long grassed lane. Its front yard has a pair of rubble stone gate piers supporting a wrought iron gate.

Historical Information

It is uncertain whether a building is shown on this precise spot on the 1835 OS map. It is not valued in the 1835 Valuation book, so must have been a small one-storey structure. A building is depicted on the 1861 map and valued at 10s in the 1862 Valuation. Its valuation increases to £1.5s.0d (an increase of 150%) in the 1866 Valuation revision book, with no change thereafter. This indicates a major rebuild – probably to its present form - in the mid 1860s. Primary sources: 1. First edition OS 6" map, Co Armagh sheet 29, 1835 (PRONI - OS 6/2/29/1). 2. Evaluation

An interesting direct-entry vernacular house, set back off the road on a relatively concealed site. It retains much of its external character and, along with its outbuildings, forms an attractive grouping. From external inspection it appears to retain most of its internal fabric.
