Exterior Description And Setting

A two storey, two bay house aligned E-W, S of Ferryhill Rd. The base slopes slightly downwards from left to right. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled skews, and a brick chimney to each gable; that to right has dentilled coping. There are the remains of a crested terracotta ridge piece to centre of a plain ridge. Advanced eaves course. No rainwater goods. Walls are whitewashed and lime rendered over random rubble to front and back. Gables are lined cement render. There is a tarred base course. Principal elevation faces N and is symmetrical. At centre is a gabled entrance porch with natural slate roof and ridge crestings. Front face has a bead moulded t+g sheeted door. Right and left cheeks are blank. To left of porch is a granite seat. There is a single 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window to each floor of each bay. All have granite cills. Those to first floor are slightly diminished in height. Left gable is blank. Rear elevation has two modern windows in original openings to each bay on ground floor. At first floor left is a 1/1 sliding sash. Right gable is abutted by a (now roofless) single storey random rubble lean-to. At first floor left, on exposed gable, is a fixed single pane window. There are outbuildings to N.

Historical Information

Although a building is shown here on the 1835 and 1861 OS map, it seems to have a different form to the present one. It is valued at £1 in the 1862 second Valuation. Its rateable value increases to £2.10s.0d in 1893 and it is explicitly noted as house 11yds x 5yds x 2 storeys. It probably took its present form at that date.
