Exterior Description And Setting

To SE of castle is the farmyard arranged in a rectangular plan around a central yard. It is set on the slope of the demesne and is reached from the garden to front of the castle and by a lane to the N of the main driveway. It is accessed by a pair of wrought-iron loop-headed gates supported on rubble stone gate piers with stone copings. To W is a similar rubble stone boundary wall containing a well set within a semi-circular headed lime-rendered niche. To SE is a walled garden. Farmyard comprises a (1) stable block with two rear returns to the SW corner(HB16/13/001B), (2) a split level outbuilding to the W, (3) a barn to the N, (4) Animal houses to the E and a (5) boiler house to the SE corner. To W of farmyard is a small store (6). The farmyard is accessed by a semi-elliptical archway with finely dressed granite voussoirs. Its right side abuts the W face of the boiler house; its left side abuts the remains of a ruinous outbuilding. (1) Stable block See HB16/13/001B (2) Outbuilding The W end of the farmyard is enclosed by a large outbuilding - its left gable abuts the right return of the stable block. As before, its W face is single-storey and its E face is three-storey. It has a pitched corrugated asbestos cement roof and unrendered rubble stone walls. All window openings have granite cills, except those to second floor. Yard (E) facing elevation has a window opening to centre flanked by a door opening to either end of ground floor. First floor has three window openings (that to centre is smaller). Second floor has two window openings with heads at eaves level. Left gable abuts rear return of the stable block. W face is abutted to left by a ruinous two-storey outbuilding (of no interest); the exposed section has a t+g door to centre. Right gable is abutted by a large (ruinous) lean-to with a natural slate roof (of no interest). (3).Barn Single storey barn with pitched corrugated metal roof. Yard (S) facing elevation has two window openings at centre and a t+g sheeted door at extreme left end. The extreme right end is abutted by the animal house (see later). Left gable abuts the split-level outbuilding. Right gable has a t+g sheeted door set to left and a arrow loop window to right. There is a window opening to first floor, containing the remains of a lattice-framed window. Rear (N) elevation is blank. (4) Animal House To E of yard is single-storey animal house with monopitched natural slate roof. Yard (W) facing elevation has four t+g sheeted doors. Left gable is abutted by the barn. Rear (E) elevation is completely abutted by a lean-to pen. Right gable is abutted by taller two-storey boiler house (see later). Pen has a corrugated asbestos roof and alternating t+g sheeted doors and metal-framed casements. Its right and left cheeks are blank. (5) Boiler House This has a pitched natural slate roof and the remains of a brick chimney to S gable. Yard (W) facing elevation has two windows to each floor. S facing gable has a t+g sheeted door at ground floor right, and two window openings to first floor (that to left is infilled). E face is blank. N gable is abutted by the animal house. (6) Store To W of the stable block, is a small store on a raised bank. It has a pitched natural slate roof and lime-rendered rubble stone walls. W face has a door to left and a single fixed-pane with metal lattice frame over to right. S cheek has an infilled window opening set at right. N and E faces are blank.

Historical Information

Killevy lodge (HB16/13/001A) was transformed into the present building in 1836 by George Papworth, it was during this time that the farm buildings were added to the Foxall demesne. In 1852 the castle was offered for sale by auction and the sale particulars state that “The out-offices are on a corresponding scale and of real utility and convenience”. Primary Sources 1.
