Exterior Description And Setting

A walled garden (kitchen garden) with random rubble stone, approximately 3 metres high without coping with undulating wall top enclosing an area of 1.12 hectares. Its N E Short boundary forms one side of the farmyard and stretches in a SE direction. It no longer produces vegetables and fruit for the kitchen table and is presently planted with a mix of broadleaf and coniferous trees. Access to it is in the middle of the S W wall.

Historical Information

The walled garden may date from the 17th cent. The stonework of the walls is similar to that of the Barn. It is unlikely to be later than the mid 18th cent. Evaluation

The wall garden at Springhill is a good example of a generous kitchen garden attached to a substantial countryhouse. It has a fine and substantial rubble stone enclosing wall which must date from the mid 18th cent. if not late 17th cent.
