Exterior Description And Setting

Compact, one and a half storey hipped roof house in typical late Victorian free classical style with gabled bays to front. The house is set on a slight rise on the W side of Main Street on the N side of Ballynahinch town centre. The front façade is symmetrical. To the centre is the main entrance. This consists of a panelled door, with surround with Doric ¾ columns carry a lintel and small cornice. Above this is a plain fanlight and the whole ensemble is set within an elliptical headed arch with mouldings. To the left is a chamfered three-sided bay each face of which has a 1/1 sash window all with segmental heads. To the right is a similar bay. Directly above each of the bays is a broad moulded string course and above this is a faceted hip roof. The corners have in/out moulded quoins. The ogee cast iron gutter is supported on a decorative dentil course. The S façade has a small upper floor gable to the centre with a small semicircular headed window . To the left of the ground floor is a segmental arch headed window as before. To the left is a modern French door with moulded surround. The N face is similar (but handed) and with the French door is replaced with a blind window opening. To the rear are two plainly detailed single storey hipped roof returns. The former yard is now enclosed with a PVC conservatory. The roof of the front section is hipped and slated. The ridges all have decorative red fireclay ridge tiles. The walls rest on a slightly splayed plinth.
