Historical Information

The original thatched cottage was indicated on O.S. map of 1832 and was demolished by present owner in 1980s. The cottage had been in the same family for at least upwards on 2 centuries. The cottage was 4 bays long with off centre door with porch, 2 windows on one side and a single on other. Gable chimneys and a further one on ridge centred on 2 windows. See sketch illustrated on slide. The owner grew his own wheat from which to thatch the cottage. The last thatcher was from Portglenone and he thought him expensive at £70 for 3 days.
