Exterior Description And Setting

A large store, peripheral stone wall, corrugated iron roof and gables. A large store approximately 30 metres by 22 metres with enclosing random rubble black stone walls. The pitched roof is of corrugated iron as are the infill gables. The store is entered from Mill Lane. The building lies immediately south of the courtyard of the Orange Hall (see HB09/06/003).

Historical Information

It is doubtful if this building has any historical significance in respect of siting or remains of former 17th cent. castle or bawn wall. The castle and bawn were probably on the site of the former school and school yard. It is recorded that when the school was being erected the footings of heavy walls were encountered. Where these were of the bawn wall or castle is not clear. One would have assumed that the bawn was on the north side of the castle. See Raven’s map of 1622. The walls are not shown on the O.S. map of 1832 but there appears to be some enclosure shown on O.S. Map of 1856. SMR. No. LDY 46.23.

A large store of little architectural interest. It does have a substantial enclosing rubble wall but its doubtful if the wall is of historical significance.
