Exterior Description And Setting

A 3 bay wide 2 storey house with back return. The entrance elevation has a central pedimented and pilastered surround doorway with 6 panelled PVC door. On each side a single 12 pane double hung sliding sash PVC window and 3 no. similar at 1st floor directly over openings below. Wall smooth rendered and painted, ½ round gutter, single downpipe, fascia with overhang, asbestos slates on roof, gabled, with chimney stack on each gable. Windows on gables, rear back return similar to front elevation and walls plastered and painted. On the NW gable a peculiar ground floor bay which consists of flue stack expressed, small narrow vertical windows on each side and over a canted bay slated roof. Behind the house 1 and 2 storey outbuildings built of black stone random rubble walls with corrugated iron roofs. The 2 storey part has a 3 centre arch opening for coach or trap brick trimmed. A small abandoned office is situated at entrance to yard. House and outbuildings adjoin county road.

Historical Information

Notes from the 1st survey refers to a plaque “Erected by John Ekin of 1826” and states the stone is a later insertion. The plaque is no longer there. The blackstone walls have been plastered, roof reslated in asbestos and PVC windows installed within the last ten years. The building is indicated on the O.S. map of 1832. The former owners carried on a quarry business and near the house at the roadside are the remains of a small office. There was a quarry and lime kiln nearby. The house has changed hands since the 1st Survey and the present owner renovated the house.
