Exterior Description And Setting

Small single storey vernacular house, set on a slight rise to the S of the Hillsborough Road, c.1.5 miles SW of Comber. Front (E) facade has a right of centre plain timber sheeted door. To the left of the door are two sash windows with Georgian panes, with a similar window to the right of the door. Both gables are blank. Close to the centre of the rear facade is a small four pane window. The entire facade is finished in rough cast, some of which has flaked off. The gabled roof is covered in Bangor blue slates. Three unevenly spaced rendered chimney stacks. No rainwater goods. Water tank placed against rear facade (on breeze blocks). New modern replacement dwelling a short distance to SW. This house has been vacant for some years and is in poor condition.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834 and 1858, which probably corresponds to the building we see today. The property is not noted in the valuation returns of 1834 as it undoubtedly below rateable value. Unfortunately the map relating to the 2nd valuation of 1863 appears to be missing, thus little of the history of this building is clear. The current owner states that the house was last lived in by a Mr. Jameson (now deceased) who apparently received it as a wedding present! A replace dwelling has been built a few yards to the SW.
