Exterior Description And Setting

Site, on the S side of the Bryansford Road, 5 miles W of Newcastle (and a mile S of the small village of Kilcoo), of a former 2 storey vernacular house of possible pre 1834 origin, demolished c.1994-5. The site is now vacant, though some (derelict) single storey, rubble-built, outbuildings remain. A modern style single storey replacement dwelling has been built a short distance to the SE of the site. The original house was described in the first survey of July 1972 as: ‘A two storey harled and whitened house with parapet gables [and] four chimneys. Sashed windows have vertical division. A gabled porch has a carved barge board. Storage accommodation at east end has a sheeted door to the ground floor and steps to upper part’. The accompanying survey photograph shows the house to have been a vernacular dwelling.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859, which probably corresponded in some form to the house which stood here until recently. The building was not noted during the c.1836 valuation, but was in the hands of a William Duke (who leased the land from Lord Annesley) when valued in 1863. The house was demolished in c.1994-5.
