Exterior Description And Setting

A semi-circular arched stone bridge over the Altmover burn on the former line of the Altmover Road. A semi-circular stone arch bridge springing from the waterline with irregular voissoirs but in a regular line and giving a sharp edge to the intrados. It spans approximately 4½ metres and has a carriageway of 3.6 metres without parapet. The road is now a laneway and the bridge is overgrown. On the downstream side the arch shows signs of possible collapse and there is a wide lateral crack on the intrados. The construction is local sandstone.

Being a semi-circular arched bridge with narrow carriageway this is probably of a late 18th century date. It is shown on the 1832 O.S. map and the line of the road is shown changed on the 1856 revision. It is not referred to in the O.S. Memoirs. References Primary Sources 1. O.S. A late 18th century single arch sandstone bridge over the Altmover Burn at the bottom end of Altmover Glen and known as the Hollow Bridge. It is typical of the early narrow bridges. However many of this type survive in good order and listing is not justified.
