Exterior Description And Setting

Two and a half storey/ two bay house, set third from left at SW end of a terrace at NW side of Great George’s Street. Pitched natural slate roof with advanced eaves course supporting half round plastic gutters. Red brick corbelled chimney on party wall with HB16/11/034B. Two wall-head dormers to front pitch, their roofs are detailed as main house with plain timber bargeboards. Each dormer has a segmental headed 1/1 sash window (with horns). Principal elevation faces SE to street. Walls are smooth rendered and painted with smooth rendered and unpainted chamfered basecourse. A narrow raised stucco band runs up the left-hand side, across the top at dormer cill level, and down the right-hand side. Entrance is set to ground floor right in a semicircular headed opening with lugged smooth rendered architrave. Door is modern stained timber four panelled (raised and fielded) with plain fanlight over (no glazing bars). To left bay is a 1/1 sliding sash window with horns, painted cill and architrave as door. All windows are as this unless otherwise stated. First floor has a window to each bay - that to right (over entrance) is slightly narrower. Small area to front is raised and paved. Left gable is completely abutted by adjoining building (HB16/11/034B). Rear elevation was not inspected. Right gable is completely abutted by adjoining building (HB16/11/034D).

Historical Information

Not on the 1834 town map. Shown on the 1861 map and described in the 1863 Valuation Book as measuring 7.5yds x 8.75yds x 2 2/3 storeys high, with a 1.5 storey return. Although little changed, this house stands in a much altered terrace which detracts from overall character and appearance.
