Exterior Description And Setting

Original two storey/ three bay house, with gabled extension advancing to left of façade, has been completely stripped and retains no features of interest (see historical description). The original gabled roof has been replaced with a hipped one, render has been stripped, front porch removed and modern widows and cills inserted.

Historical Information

Shown on the 1834 OS 6” map and described in the 1835 Valuation as measuring 32ft x 21ft6in x 13ft (i.e. two storeys). Similar dimensions given in 1863 Valuation, and no change in valuation thereafter, indicating that it may well be the same earlier 19thC house. Explicitly cited as Aghavilly Cottage on 1902 OS map. The HMBB first survey card states, “A two storey harled and whitened house with squat unrecessed plain sashed windows and glazed square timber porch. Terminates in gable to west of façade. Further two storey building at rear.” HMBB first survey slide shows a symmetrical two storey/ three bay house with single bay gabled extension advancing to left of façade. Pitched natural slate roof with rendered skew to right gable, which has a rendered chimney. Left gable ties into roof of extension and has a similar chimney. Walls are harled and white washed with advanced basecourse, to main house. House has a single storey gabled porch to central bay. Roof covering is not visible. Its gable has a fretted timber bargeboard with spiked finial. Front gable has a rendered wall below three rectangular 2x2 paned fixed window, plain cill, and gable over is t+g sheeted (in line with pitch of roof). Entrance (not visible) on right cheek. Each remaining bay of front elevation has a squat 1/1 exposed box sliding sash window with painted dressed stone cill. Extension walls are smooth rendered and painted. Its front gable has a window on each floor. Both are pair of side hung casements with a large top hung transom over. Primary Sources: 1. OS 6” map, 1834, Co Down sheet 51 (PRONI, OS/6/3/51/1). 2.
