Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey /two bay vernacular house in farmyard off Clontafleece Road. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled skews and red brick coped chimneys – one to each gable. Plastic half round rainwater goods on raised rendered eaves. Walls are smooth rendered over random rubble. Main elevation faces S into yard. Modern plywood door in a windbreak porch to centre (at left side of right bay). Pitched natural slate roof and plain bargeboards (one missing). Window to right and also to left bay. Window to first floor of both bays. All have painted granite cills and are boarded up. Left gable is blank Right gable is abutted by a single storey concrete blockwork outbuilding which advances out beyond the front elevation. Rear elevation has a window opening to each floor of each bay. That at top left lights the stairwell.

Historical Information

Although a house is shown here on the 1834 OS 6" map (probably a one-storey thatched house), it is first described in its present form in the 1914 Valuation Revision entry (measuring 33ft x 16ft x 16ft high). Its rateable valuation increases from £1 to £3 at this time. Although it could be an enlargement of the original, it is more likely to be a complete rebuild. Primary sources: 1.
