Exterior Description And Setting

One and a half storey/ three bay vernacular house of lane on N-side Clontafleece Road. Pitched natural slate roof with three painted stone chimneys – one to each gable and one between left and centre bays. Modern timber eaves support half-round plastic rainwater goods. Walls are random rubble, (unpainted to left bay). Principal elevation faces S. Windbreak porch is set to right of centre bay with walls as main block and monopitched natural slate roof. To its left is a single modern top-hung casement window with whitewashed granite cill. Identical window to each end bay. Centre and right bays also have a later small window (lighting the attic floor) inserted immediately above the ground floor one, with a concrete cill. Left gable is unpainted random rubble and blank. Rear elevation is rendered to left and centre bays and has exposed random rubble to right bay. Each bay has a single modern casement window with granite cill. That to centre bay is a later insertion and has no cill. To its right is modern timber door with plain transom over. Right gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding with a shallow monopitched corrugated metal roof (of no interest). The remainder of the gable is whitewashed. Small window to gable apex.

Historical Information

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6" map. The absence of a rateable valuation suggests a one-storey vernacular building, probably the same one as presently exists. HMBB first survey card states: “Pre 1834. A single storey cottage with harled walls and slated roof. There are two double hung windows with sashes divided into two panes by single vertical glazing bars and one plain sashed window. A modern door is recessed in a lean-to porch.” Primary sources 1.
