Historical Information

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6" map. The absence of a rateable valuation suggests a one-storey vernacular building, probably the same one which was demolished. The HMBB first survey card states, “Pre 1834. A single storey cottage with harled walls and slated roof. A projecting porch is contained under an extension of the main roof. Double hung windows have sashes divided into two panes with single vertical glazing bars.” The first survey slide shows a building which seems to be three bays wide (right corner not visible). It has a rendered chimney on left gable and one on either side of central bay. Pitched natural slate roof with render skew to left gable and slightly advanced eaves but no rainwater goods. Harled and painted walls. All windows are 2/2 (vertically divided) sliding sashes with rendered cills. Each bay has a single window and central bay has a windbreak porch with a catslide roof (off main pitch). Door not visible. Primary sources: 1. OS 6" map, 1st edition (1834), Co Down sheet 51. 2.
