Exterior Description And Setting

Two small shop units (formerly one large one) in a two storey building set in a terrace on N side of Church Street. Pitched natural slate roof with concrete right skew and advanced eaves course supporting half-round metal rainwater goods. Front wall is lined rendered and painted with plain cill course between ground and first floor. Each unit is one window wide at first floor level. Ground floor of each unit is filled by a modern shop front of no interest. First floor of each unit has a large modern top-hung casement window. Left and right gables are completely abutted by adjacent buildings. Rear elevation not inspected.

Historical Information

Shown on the 1834 Valuation town plan and described in the 1835 Valuation as measuring 25ft x 27ft6in x 19ft. Similar dimensions given in 1863 Valuation book, suggesting the same building. Valuation remains constant, then increases from £14 to £19 in 1875 with the addition of a new back wing. Increases to £24 in 1877, suggesting a major refurbishment. The HMBB first survey card, “c1864. A two-storey building shopped on ground floor, with lined rendered walls above and modern windows. The roof is slated. Plain pilasters rise to a fascia board. A moulded circular advertising sign is placed between the first and second floor windows.” The HMBB first survey slide shows the advertising sign, a pair of hands cupped around a lightening bolt with words, ELECTRICITY, above, and IN SAFE HANDS, below.
