Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey/ two bay house on W side of Rath Road. House is much altered and retains no features of interest. Pitched artificial slate roof with modern overhanging eaves and dashed chimney to each gable. Plastic rainwater goods. Cement wet dashed walls. Front elevation faces E. Modern front door is to right side of the left bay with a concrete canopy over. Each bay on each floor has a large modern stained timber picture window with a concrete cill. The right gable is blank. The left gable is abutted to ground floor by a single storey block which is detailed as main one. Rear is all modern with a two-storey return at left end.

Historical Information

A building is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map. This is undoubtedly a later 19thC rebuild. The first survey slide shows the house in its less altered state. Pitched natural slate roof with rendered chimney to either end. Front walls are pebble-dashed with smooth bands to left and right corners. A single storey gabled porch abuts left bay with roof as main block and smooth rendered walls. Its front gable has a 6/3 sash and its right cheek is blank. Its left cheek is not visible. Each remaining bay has a 4/2 sliding sash window with smooth rendered architrave and no cill. The right gable of house is smooth rendered and blank. The left gable is abutted by a single storey return with roof and walls as main block and chimney on its left gable. Its front wall has a 6/6 sash window. Small front garden has a white washed rubble stone wall and wrought iron gate. Primary sources 1. OS 6” map, 1834, Co Down sheet 54 (PRONI – OS 6/3/54/1). 2. HMMB slide dated 20 January 1970.
