Exterior Description And Setting

Block of two, one and a half storey, attached estate workers houses of c.1900, now one dwelling and much extended in recent times. The property is situated on the NE side of the Tullyveery Road, c.2 miles NW of Killyleagh. Each house was originally entered via the main gable. The main entrance to the property as it now stands is via a large gabled porch to the left side of the NE gable. This porch has a timber sheeted door and large PVC ‘corner’ window. To the right of this porch there are a pair of French doors (where the original entrance was). To the upper level there is a window with painted brick dressings and a PVC frame. The SW façade is symmetrical with two double sash windows to the ground floor (four over four Edwardian Domestic Revival glazing) and two gabled half dormers with PVC windows. All of these windows have painted brick dressings as that to NW gable). The SE gable has two fairly small PVC windows to the centre and centre right on the ground floor. To the right of these there is a porch-like projection with mono-pitched roof, which links to a flat roofed extension further to the right. To the upper level is a window as upper level NW gable. The whole of the original rear façade is now completely covered in extensions, with a full height hipped roof one to the left and a single storey lean to-like one to the right, all with various sized modern windows. The façade is finished in a recent Tyrolean-like render with a plain rendered recessed base. The main roof is gabled and has an overhang and central chimney stack in brown-ish cream brick. The roof is covered in a mixture of asbestos and asbestos-free slate. PVC rw goods.

Historical Information

This property was originally two estate workers houses, built around 1900. They were probably originally associated with near by Tullyveery House and, according to the current resident, were lived in by the families of the coach man and gardener. The current owner acquired the building in 1980, by which time both houses had been amalgamated and the large porch to the north west gable and the lean to extension to the rear had been added. The large full height rear extension is post 1980, however.
