Exterior Description And Setting

One storey granite gate lodge associated with Drumalane House (otherwise known as Ivybrook Lodge; HB16/29/007A). A high wall separates it from the road to the former spinning mill (HB16/29/010). Pitched artificial slate roof with overhanging eaves and half-round rainwater goods. Brick chimney (with projecting concrete cap) towards west end of ridge. Walls of line render, except at south where they are of finely dressed granite blocks in strap-pointed irregular courses. South wall has entrance door towards left side, with stepped brick dressings; accessed by concrete steps and wheelchair ramp. Five window openings in this wall: two to left of door and three to right. All have stepped brick jambs, soldier course brick heads and finely-dressed granite cills. The actual windows are modern two-pane casements with transoms over, and with metal grilles to front. West gable blank. North wall has two windows (identical to south wall) to left and to right of approximately central modern door; metal grilles over. Single three-pane casement window (with transoms) on east gable; metal grille over.

Historical Information

This gate lodge first appears in the 1877 Valuation Revision book entry. It then belonged to Drumalane Flax Spinning Company, which also owned the house and mill. Judging by the names of the occupants listed in the Valuations, it served the house rather than mill. Source: PRONI – VAL 12B/15/1C, p.317.

One storey granite gate lodge associated with Drumalane House (otherwise known as Ivybrook Lodge; HB16/29/007A). Although of some group value when taken with Ivybrook Lodge, its refurbishment has greatly diminished its original character.
