Exterior Description And Setting

A 2 storey 3 bay wide house, hipped roof and central chimney stacks. The elevation to Market Street, is 3 bays wide with gabled projecting single storey porch, with single PVC 3 pane window. Door on flanking wall. On each side of porch single PVC 3 pane windows and at 1st floor 3 no. similar windows. ½ round gutter, natural slated roof with hips, plain ridge tile with 2 no. chimney stacks centred on short length of ridge. Walls smooth rendered, rusticated plaster quoins, painted. E & W gables have 2 no. windows each at ground and 1st floor, vertically over each other, PVC as before. To the rear a central lean-to roofed 2 storey back return with single sliding sash 2 pane window at ground and 1st floor. Back door on flanking wall. The house is sited on rising ground overlooking Market Street with a pedestrian pathway to it. Vehicular access is from Moyle Road.

Historical Information

The house probably dates from c 1870 when it was the minister’s residence. It is not indicated on the O.S. Map 1856. It became the residence of the Catholic curates in 1925 and before that it may have been the convent of the Cross and Passion nuns who came to Ballycastle in 1913. Evaluation

A plain Victorian house of 2 storey and 3 bays wide built for the minister of the former adjacent Methodist church. It enjoys a commanding site but its appearance has been diluted by gabled entrance porch and insertion of uPVC windows.
