Exterior Description And Setting

An attractive Grecian-Revival style gate screen serving Maryvale House (HB16/14/008A). Concave screen has a shallow ‘S’ sweep to either side of central gates. It is supported to either end by piers, with similar to centre carrying a pair of vehicle gates. Each pier rests on a dressed granite plinth and is in red brickwork with a central plastered Gothic recess to each face and swept to a pyramidal granite cap. A finely dressed granite plinth (roughly dressed to inside) follows the line of the screen and supports the very fine cast-iron railings. They have collared vertical bars with Grecian Palmette finials. Every sixth bar has a claw-foot cushion where it rests on the plinth. Along the bottom rail are slightly different Palmette castings and top rail has a fretted decorative frieze. There are no diagonal braces supporting to rear. The two matching gates are detailed as the railings but with an additional rail of interlocking cast iron foliage at ground level.

Probably erected in the mid 1800s along with the lodge on the opposite side of the road (HB16/14/017). First shown on the 1859 OS 6" map. Primary sources 1.
