Exterior Description And Setting

Situated on verge on left (W) side of main Belfast Road. A finely dressed granite post (c75cm in height) with a sloping top and chamfered basecourse. There is a recess to front into which a cast iron plaque (now gone) would have been inset. Two bolts holes run through from front to back of stone.

This milepost is very similar to that near Millbrook Villas on the Belfast Road (HB16/26/067). It lies along the main Banbridge – Newry turnpike road and is probably of early 19th century date (although not cited in the OS 6" maps until the 1903 edition). Primary sources: 1. One of several milestones of similar design on what was once the main Belfast – Dublin turnpike road. This example has lost its cast iron plaque but retains its prominent roadside position. Of an increasingly scarce type of industrial monument.
