Historical Information

Remains of buildings demolished several years ago. HMBB survey card of 1972 notes that erected by Mr Glenny in 1842 on the site of an earlier corn mill (shown on 1834 OS map). It is described as “Ruins of stone buildings, part harled with brick dressings and slated roofs surmounted by two pyramidal roof ventilators. Varies from five storeys to three storeys.” 1986 survey card notes: “Five-storey flour mill powered by internal 14ft dia breast-shot wheel in adjoining three-storey building. Three-storey kiln abuts at east end, as does one at north return to five-storey mill. One kiln reasonably intact. Mill fire gutted, with little surviving machinery. Roof and floors gone, and increasingly ruinous. Apparently operational until early 1960s.” Primary Sources: 1. HMBB survey card dated 14 Dec 1972. 2. Ditto, dated 9 June 1986.
