Historical Information

This gate lodge was demolished in the late 1970s. It was set on S side of Carnacally Road, with its front elevation facing N to the main gates of Maryvale (HB16/14/018A) on the opposite side of the road. The front gate screen (HB16/14/018B) remains intact. Neither gates nor lodge are shown on the 1834 OS map. Lodge is shown but not captioned on the 1859 map opposite the main entrance to 'Maryvale'. Explicitly cited as 'gate lodge' in the 1862 Griffith valuation. Undoubtedly of mid 19th century date. The HMBB first survey card states, ‘A single storey harled and whitened building with slated roof and modern brick chimney. A projecting gabled porch, with sheeted door, lozenge pane rectangular fanlight and carved bargeboard, is flanked to either side by a multi-paned lozenge decorated window. Fascia and part of main bargeboards are also carved. There are sixteen paned windows in gables. Two sets of gate pillars part of layout. Poor condition.’ The HMBB first survey slide shows the chimney to be on the centre of the ridge and the roof to have overhanging eaves with plain bargeboards. Primary Sources: 1. 1st edition OS map Down sheet 41 (1834). 2. 2nd edition OS map Down sheet 41 (1859). 3. Second Valuation, 1862 (PRONI VAL 2B/3/69E, p.331). 4. Information from owner in February 2000. 5. HMBB first survey slide dated January 1973. 6. HMBB first survey card dated December 1972.
