Exterior Description And Setting

Linear single storey, four bay vernacular schoolhouse including a master’s dwelling, on the S side of, and aligned at right angles to, the Loughorne Road. Pitched natural slate roof (mostly collapsed) with overhanging eaves of plain projecting rafters, which cantilever from the wall head and carry a timber soffit. Small cast-iron skylight to the N end of the front (W) pitch. Two red brick chimneys (both now collapsed), one between the first and second bays from the left and one between the third and fourth bays. Principal elevation faces W. Walls are harled rubble stone. First three bays from left contained the schoolmaster’s house and fourth bay was the schoolroom. The fourth bay is double the width of the other bays. All windows are rectangular (portrait) with dressed granite cills. Left bay has a 2/2 timber fixed window. Bay 2 has a window opening with granite cill; to its right is a doorway. Bay 3 has one window opening and the fourth bay has three window openings. The right (S) gable is abutted to its right side by a small derelict lean-to. The exposed left section has a doorway. The rear (E) elevation has three window openings on its left (widest) bay. The second bay from left has a single window opening. The third bay is blank and the fourth bay has the remains of a 2/2 sliding sash window. The left (N) gable is blank and faces onto the Loughorne Road.

Historical Information

This building was erected in 1824, the site and funds being donated by John Martin of Loughorne Cottage, the landowner. Although it is shown on the 1st edition OS map and captioned ‘Loughorne School’, it appears to be much smaller than the present building and does not extend as far N as it does on the 2nd edition OS map. On that map it is captioned ‘National School’ and appears as it is today. The change in size between 1834 and 1859 would suggest that the two N bays of the schoolmaster’s house are a mid-19thC addition. The school closed in 1904 when Loughorne Primary School was opened.
