Historical Information

A building is shown at this location on the 1834 OS 6" map. However, the first Valuation map of around the same date is missing, so it is not possible to ascertain from the first Valuation book whether its dimensions match those of the present house. Although a building is also shown on the 1859 OS map, its alignment differs slightly to the one shown on later maps. The 1862 valuation is £4 and this remains constant through to 1929. This possibly indicates a construction date of c.1860. The house is captioned 'Vine Cottage' on the 1918 map (the 1903 map is missing from PRONI). The present owner stated that this building was burnt down c1990 and was replaced by the present house. The HMBB first survey slide shows a one and a half storey three bay house with pitched natural slate roof. Each end gable has a rendered and painted chimney. The front pitch has three gabled dormers, each with decorative terracotta ridges and plain bargeboards. The front elevation is smooth rendered and painted with stepped V-channelled stucco quoins and a painted basecourse. The main entrance is to ground floor centre. Two steps rise to a modern door which is flanked by three paned (centre one larger) sidelights with thin panelled timber pilasters. Over is a semi-elliptical radial fanlight. Single window to ground floor left and right bays. Each upper floor gable contains a semicircular-headed window opening. All front openings have stucco keystones and all windows are modern replacements. The HMBB first survey card states, ‘A two-storey rendered building with three gabled on east (front) elevation. Semicircular headed windows in first floor and square headed windows below have been replaced with modern insertions. The entrance is recessed in a segmental arched opening with radial fanlight and three-paned sidelights.’ Primary sources: 1. OS 6" map, 1834, Co Down sheet 41 (PRONI OS 6/3/41/1). 2.
