Exterior Description And Setting

Site, just N of the Vestry Road, c.1.5 miles S of Ballygowan, of a former single storey thatched vernacular house, demolished in 1994 with modern replacement dwelling close by. The 1st survey (22nd Feb. 1974) described the original dwelling as a ‘Single storey cottage. Roof thatched, gable ends, brick chimneys. Wall rendered and white washed. SE front has three drop hung windows, 2 [with] margin panes and that on right hand no astragals. Glazed and sheeted door between windows 1 and 2. Condition fair to poorish. Front about 42 feet’. The replacement dwelling was built in the early 1980s.

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1858, though that of 1833 looks to have been set at a slightly different angle than that on the latter map, or the house that stood here until recently. The valuation returns of 1834 do not mention the building on the site, though the land around it was in the hands of one Robert Conolly. The c.1863 valuation does note the house which was rated at the modest sum of £1-15-0 and in the possession of a William Craig. Interestingly the property belonged to a Mr. R.J. Craig when it was first surveyed in 1974, presumably a descendant/relative of William of 1858. The house was demolished in 1994, some years after a modern replacement dwelling was built close to the site.
