Exterior Description And Setting

Much modernised two storey gabled farm house at the W side of the Tullynagee Road, c.2.5 miles W of Ballygowan. The front (E) facade has a Right of centre timber and glazed door surrounded by a large PVC conservatory. To the left of this are two PVC windows, widely spaced. To the right is a single similar window. To the first floor are four slightly smaller windows with frames as before. The space between the 1st and 2nd windows is much greater than the rest. The N gable has a window as front to the right on the ground floor and a similar window to the right on the first floor. The S gable has two windows (as before) to the first floor. To the centre left at the rear is a large single storey lean to extension with three PVC windows to its rear face and a PVC door to the N. To the right of this (on the main rear facade) is a large-ish picture window to the ground floor and a smaller window to the first floor. The facade is covered in a limestone chip dash with smooth cement render to wall edges, openings and as a recessed base. The roof is covered in Bangor blue slates with three (fairly recent) brick chimney stacks, unevenly spaced. PVC rainwater goods. Two large Velux windows to the rear.

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1858. The irregular spacing of the windows to the south side is something of a give-away as to the evolution of the house with the larger section to the north undoubtedly representing the original dwelling and possibly one and a half storey, with that to the south a barn and probably originally single storey. In c.1988/9 the property was completely gutted and ‘modernised’. The valuation returns of 1834 do not comment on the house, but it appears to have been in possession of either a John or James Orr, who leased it from Rev. Mark Cassidy of Newtownards. In 1858 it was in the hands of a Gowan McCullagh, who leased it from the ‘representatives of Rowland Savage’ References- Primary sources 1 PRONI D.1088 Cassidy Papers- The papers of Rev. Evaluation

Two storey gabled form house, of possible pre 1833 origin, but much altered over the years, probably with the roof raised and with a former barn to the south side incorporated into the dwelling. In 1988/9 the property was completely ‘modernised’ with PVC windows, door and large conservatory installed/added. The interior detailing is modern also.
