Exterior Description And Setting

Site, and the end of a farm lane to the E of the Killinchy Road c.2 miles S of Comber, of a former single storey house, now demolished with new larger dwelling in place. The former property was described in the 1st survey (9th Jan. 1974) as a ‘Single storey cottage. Roof slated in 2 sections, gable ends. Chimneys brick and rough cast. Walls rough cast and whitewashed. SW front has 3 drop hung windows [with] Georgian panes. Doorway between 2nd and 3rd windows, door panelled, plain fanlight. Condition poorish. Front about 52 feet. Extension and outbuildings at back. Inscription on stone to front….Inscription stone reads “Built by H. Lowry 1832”’. All outbuildings appear to have been demolished as well as the house.

Historical Information

The inscription stone noted in the original survey suggests that the house previously on this site was constructed in 1832. A building of the same plan appears on the 1834 OS map and the valuation returns (of the same year) note that the property was in the hands of a Hamilton Lowry (presumably the ‘H. Lowry’ on the stone), and consisted of a ‘house, house return, office and house’ all of which had a [?presumably below] rateable value of £4-13-6. The complex was undoubtedly leased by Lowry from Rev. Mark Cassidy, the then curate of St. Marks Newtownards and proprietor of Ballykeel townland. Judging by the appearance of the new dwelling on the site, it appears the former Lowry farmstead was demolished in its entirety perhaps around 1990.
