Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey gabled 3-bay house with a lower gabled two-storey wing to one end. Main entrance faces south. South elevation of main block is symmetrical with a pair of windows to each side of a central entrance. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; walls smooth cement rendered, lined and blocked, with raised quoins to extremities, projecting plinth, and projecting frieze. A corbel course supports the moulded gutter; cast iron downpipe. Three chimneys, smooth cement rendered, with projecting cornices and angled caps. Windows are segmental arched timber sliding sashes, 1 over 1, with horns, with raised block dressings in smooth render. Entrance comprises a rectangular 4-panel door set in a chamfered timber framed screen incorporating rectangular sidelights and fanlight, recessed in a chamfered opening; fluted pilasters with modelled flat arch of faceted rustication; floriated details. All modelled work is recent replacement using moulds made from original door surround. Wing to left has two pairs of windows to each floor, and two chimneys; all detailing and fabric similar to main block. West gable rendered as entrance front; two rectangular windows sashed as previously. Extending to the left is a single storey rear return, rendered as previous, with rectangular windows sashed as previous. Metal gutter and cast iron downpipe. Roof slated as previous. North gable of return is of basalt rubble. East side of return is of basalt rubble, with projecting brick eaves course; wide arched brick dressed opening, recently fitted with a timber glazed doorscreen. Metal gutter and downpipe. Rear elevation of house and wing are rendered as front; windows rectangular timber sashes, 1 over 1, with horns, except one window containing decorative leaded glazing, all set in raised and chamfered surrounds. Roofs slated as previous; metal rainwater goods. Rear entrance, in wing, is a new rectangular ledged timber door set in raised and chamfered surround. Ledged timber door in main block, down a flight of stone steps, leads to small basement. The rear wall of the main block of the house is battered full height, but wall of wing is plumb. East gable is a blank wall, rendered as previous, with a full-height batter. SETTING: The house stands in a rural area, on an elevated site overlooking a motorway to the south. It stands sideways on, next to a road, formerly the main public road from Templepatrick to Parkgate but now only a cul-de-sac due to the motorway having cut it off. Garden with lawn and mature trees to front of house, bordered along the road by a rendered wall surmounted by decorative iron railings. Gate piers and end piers are square with chamfered edges, weathered caps and corbel courses; pedestrian gate of similar ironwork to railings. Front garden closed off from rear yard by a rendered wall with a gateway of square piers and looped iron gates. To the rear of the house stands a range of two-storey outbuildings around three sides of a rear yard. Built of basalt rubble with painted brick dressings. Slated roofs hipped and gabled; wide arched open entrances; rectangular window openings. Interiors are stone walled with concrete floors, timber roofs of no special interest. Outbuildings are partially derelict with no features of special interest.

Historical Information

Precise date of building not known, but it appears on the OS map of 1902. The OS maps of 1832 and 1857 appear to show earlier configurations.
