Exterior Description And Setting

A range of one-storey stone outbuildings, formerly a terrace of farm labourer's cottages, standing to the west of Moat House. Roofs of Bangor blue slates in regular courses, incorporating one modern rooflight; corrugated plastic rooflights to two sections; six chimneys, rendered, with angled haunches. Walls of basalt rubble still retaining some original harling in places, with later roughcast render to the southernmost cottage which also has modern rectangular timber fixed lights with top-hung vents to each main elevation, and deep recessed square openings to the gable. Other windows are rectangular timber small-paned fixed lights, later replacements for original windows. Doors are rectangular ledged timber, except for a modern glazed flush timber door to the southernmost cottage. PVC gutters and downpipes. Standing to the west of the cottages is a detached single storey range of slated stone sheds with red brick dressings to openings, now partly modernised with corrugated perspex roofing and rectangular small paned doors fitted to the section at the east. East gable contains a stone near the verge, inscribed 'DB 1739' for David Beck first known owner of the farm. Moat House itself is a two-storey rendered house with concrete tiled roof and modern finishes and fittings. SETTING: The outbuildings stand in a very rural location in a grassy garden, with mature trees in the immediate vicinity. A horse walk comprising a cast iron wheel with a long angled iron armature is slightly sunk into the garden immediately to the east of the cottages.

Built as a row of cottages for farm labourers; precise date of buildings not known but it appears on the OS map of 1832 along with the detached block to the west, which has a stone built into it inscribed 'DB 1739' for David Beck, first owner of the farm; the short return at the north end of the main row appears on the OS map of 1857.
